MAP of CAPE TOWN AND TRANSPORT OPTIONS

Airport
The newly refurbished and renovated Cape Town International Airport is located on the N2 highway about 20 min from the city centre.

Domestic travel within South Africa is also very efficient with various airlines offering flights on the hour to other major cities. For connecting flights, the flying time from Cape Town to Johannesburg is 2 hrs.

For further details on airports, flights and flying in Cape Town visit the following:

Unfortunately, there is not an efficient public transport system that services the airport, so other arrangements need to be made.

Taxis (Airport)
Uber and meter taxis are available at the airport. They are relatively expensive with fares charged per km. Confirm with your driver beforehand.

Car Rental
All of the major car rental companies have branches at the airport. You can both collect or drop off your vehicle directly at the airport. For car hire booking please visit www.southafricar.com

Airport Transfer
There are shuttle services that run between the airport and popular destinations such as the city centre and the waterfront. Shuttle services can often be arranged to drop you off at your booked accommodation.

Local Transport

Taxis
Uber is what the locals use. You can also consider taking a non-shared taxi at night or if you’re in a group.
There’s a taxi rank at the Adderley St end of the Grand Parade in the city or call:

  • Marine Taxi +27 21-434 0434

  • SA Cab +27 86-117 2222

  • Unicab Taxis +27 21-447 4402

Bus
Interstate buses arrive at the bus terminus at Cape Town train station, where you’ll find the booking offices for the following bus companies:

For local bus services:

  • Main station: Golden Acre terminal (Grand Parade, City Bowl)

  • Golden Arrow buses: +27 80-065 6463 | www.gabs.co.za

Buses are most useful for getting along the Atlantic coast from the City centre to Hout Bay (trains service the suburbs to the east of Table Mountain).
When traveling short distances, most people wait at the bus stop and take either a bus or a shared taxi—whichever arrives first.
A tourist-friendly alternative is the City Sightseeing Cape Town bus service.

Car Hire
Major local and international car-hire companies include:

Motorcycle and Scooter Hire

Trains
Metro commuter trains are a useful way to get around, although few to no trains operate after 6pm on weekdays and after noon on Saturdays.
